Bob Lee, the tech executive who created the mobile payment service Cash App, was tragically stabbed to death in San Francisco on Tuesday morning. He was only 43 years old.

According to reports, Lee was attacked in the city’s downtown Rincon Hill neighborhood at 2:35 a.m. When the police arrived at the scene, they found Lee with multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Lee was a former chief technology officer of Square, and had recently been serving as the chief product officer of San Francisco-based cryptocurrency company MobileCoin since November 2021. He was a true force of nature in the tech world, having also worked at Google where he led Android’s core library team and launched the world’s most-used operating system.

Lee's coworkers and friends have been pouring out tributes to him on social media. MobileCoin’s CEO Joshua Goldbard called Lee “a force of nature," saying “Bob was a force of nature. Helped to birth Android and CashApp into our world. Moby was his dream: a privacy-protecting wallet for the 21st Century. I will miss him every day.”

It's devastating to lose someone as talented and innovative as Bob Lee. He not only founded the social network Present but also invested in companies like Figma, Clubhouse, Beeper, and Faire. And when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the globe, Lee assisted the World Health Organization with their mobile app and later helped to develop an at-home testing company.

No arrest has been made yet in connection with Lee's death, but I hope that justice will be served soon. My thoughts and prayers are with Lee's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.Rest in peace, Bob Lee.
