Gangs Of Lagos (2023 Prime Video movie) Review

0

Gangs of Lagos is a movie that lives up to its hype. It portrays Lagos from a gang perspective and presents the city in full view to the world.

The movie is a rollercoaster ride of action, humor, grit, and raw emotions that will give you goosebumps. There are some scenes that are so touching, you might even shed a tear.

The casting director deserves applause for selecting actors who delivered extraordinary performances, leaving everything on the screen, from blood, and sweat to life. The story and screenplay demand intense energy, deep emotions, and method acting, and every actor, including the children, does an excellent job.

Though the story and plot are not new, the way they are presented is refreshing, and the director's vision is brought to life in technicolor.

The actors in the movie are praiseworthy. Tobi Bakare, who has already shown his acting skills in his previous movies, takes his performance to the next level in Gangs of Lagos. His expressions and delivery fit every scene, making you want to hear him speak more. The young actor who portrays his younger self does an excellent job too.

Adesuwa Etomi is impressive in her action-packed role, handling weapons like a superhero. We have seen her in romantic comedies, and now she proves that she is also a queen of action. Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha, a veteran of Nollywood, gives an outstanding performance as always, while Chike delivers a remarkable performance as the gentle and quiet member of the trio. Tayo Faniran still needs to work on his acting skills, as he appears forced in most of his scenes.

Olarotimi Fakunle, who is known as the king of stage acting and a darling of the Africa Magic series, delivers an exceptional performance as Kazeem. He proves that he is not just an excellent actor on those platforms, but he also excels in movies.

Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha is natural and is slowly acquiring the status of a veteran like the likes of Angela Basset in Holywood. Chike the musician had his cinematic debut and was great. He Should be used frequently in other roles.

Tayo Faniran was also exceptional even though his role was short.

There ware cameo appearances from Iyabo Ojo, Eniola Badmus, and Ivonne Jegede.

The fight scenes in most Nigerian action movies look fake, with drum sounds added in post-production. However, the fight scenes in Gangs of Lagos are exceptionally choreographed, making them some of the best I've seen in Nollywood movies. The fights look real, the emotions are raw, the injuries are realistic, and the blood flow matches the intensity of the fights.

The cinematography in the movie is outstanding, and the establishing and long shots provide a different view of Lagos. The movie captures the real nightlife of Isale Eko, which is breathtaking to watch.

Gangs of Lagos shows the best and worst of Isale Eko, and the story is realistic, relatable, and believable. Everyone living in Lagos has a story to tell about Isale Eko, and this movie is a refreshing take on Lagos life.

The movie is rated 8/10
