Fans of the John Wick franchise have been eagerly anticipating the release of Ballerina, the spinoff featuring Ana de Armas in the lead role. Lionsgate has finally set a release date for the highly-anticipated movie, which is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2024.
The movie explores the backstory of Rooney, the Ruska Roma assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, who was trained as a ballerina along with other female killers of the family. Ballerina is set to take place between Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, with Keanu Reeves returning as John Wick in a role that is more than just a cameo.
Little is known about the plot of Ballerina, but the movie is expected to deal with the aftermath of Parabellum, where the Ruska Roma fell from the High Table’s grace after helping John Wick. The spinoff could also set up a new franchise, with de Armas taking the lead role in multiple sequels.
Lionsgate is also developing another movie set in the same assassin universe, which Ballerina could help set up. In the meantime, fans can look forward to The Continental series, another production set in the John Wick universe, which is expected to premiere on Peacock this September.
As the release date for Ballerina draws closer, fans of the franchise are sure to be counting down the days until they can see Ana de Armas in action as the deadly ballerina assassin.
