Nigerians Attack TIME Magazine Journalist, Rajvanshi For Listing Tinubu Among 100 Most Influential Persons

Astha Rajvanshi, a journalist with TIME Magazine, recently faced criticism on social media for her article in which she named Bola Tinubu, a Nigerian politician, as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In her piece, Rajvanshi highlighted Tinubu's contributions in helping to restore democracy in Nigeria in 1999 and portrayed him as a "longtime political power broker."

However, Nigerian Twitter users, specifically supporters of the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed their disappointment with Rajvanshi's portrayal of Tinubu. They argued that Tinubu did not deserve the honor, given the ongoing controversies surrounding his election victory and his alleged involvement in the country's economic challenges.

The backlash was severe enough that Rajvanshi felt the need to lock her Twitter account. Many criticized the article as a disservice to the millions of Nigerians who have been victims of Tinubu's political maneuvering.

This incident highlights the power of social media in holding journalists accountable for their reporting. It also shows the importance of considering different perspectives and acknowledging controversies when portraying public figures.

While Tinubu's contributions to Nigeria's democracy are significant, it is essential to examine his entire record, including the allegations of corruption and the drug case that marred his political career. As journalists, we have a responsibility to provide an accurate portrayal of public figures, taking into account both their achievements and their shortcomings.
