The methodology used by Forbes to calculate these earnings is based on a combination of on-field earnings and off-field earnings. On-field earnings include all prize money, salaries, and bonuses earned during the specified time frame. Off-field earnings are estimated based on sponsorship deals, appearance fees, memorabilia, and licensing income, and cash returns from any businesses operated by the athlete during the 12 months leading up to May 1, 2023. Forbes also takes into account payouts from equity stakes athletes have sold but does not deduct taxes or agents' fees.
