AFRICA MAGIC VIEWERS’ CHOICE AWARD (AMVCA) 2023: CALL FOR ENTRY, EVENT DATES AND JUDGES

AMVCA stands for Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, which is an annual awards ceremony that celebrates outstanding achievements in the African film and television industry. The awards ceremony is organized by Africa Magic, a subsidiary of Multichoice, and it recognizes actors, directors, producers, and other professionals in the film and television industry for their contributions to the industry.

The AMVCA awards were first held in 2013, and since then, they have become one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in Africa, attracting some of the biggest names in the industry. The awards ceremony is broadcast live on television and streamed online, and winners receive a trophy and a cash prize.

The AMVCA awards cover a range of categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and many others. The awards ceremony also recognizes contributions in technical categories such as Best Cinematographer, Best Editor, and Best Sound Designer.

The ninth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) is currently in the planning stages, and MultiChoice has issued a call for entries.

The news was made in a statement by Dr. Busola Tejumola, Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice.

Tejumola invited all African filmmakers to enter their works for the 2023 edition of the awards, as well as any works that were shown in public or broadcast between December 1, 2021, and January 31, 2023.

The admission portal begins on February 20 and ends on March 10, according to her, “To enter the awards, all filmmakers must prepare a 5-minute-long show reel, the video must be less than 300MB and submitted on the Africa Magic website, the website will allocate a unique reference number to each completed online submission. All films (aired in cinemas or otherwise), made-for-television movies or television series are eligible so long as they fall within the specified timeline.”

Tejumola claims that the social media category, which was won by the rising comic Sabinus last year, will return for the ninth edition, which is scheduled for later this year.

According to her, the prize for “Best Online Social Content Creator” acknowledged the rising popularity of content creators in Africa.

She mentioned additional categories, such as lifetime and trailblazer honours, which frequently result in emotional victories.

She said that “Fast-rising actors in the period under review will be looking forward to winning the trailblazer award, which will mark a major milestone in their career.

“On the other hand, the veterans and Nollywood fans will have their fingers crossed on the African movie legend the award show will be celebrating this year.

“The fashion-forward ‘Best-Dressed’ male and female categories will also return, and attendees will be looking to beat Osas Ighodaro and Denola Grey’s gorgeous looks from last year.”

Ighodaro, according to Tejumola, also took up the prize for “Best Actress in a Drama” for her performance in “Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story.”

she said that Osas and her film were among the night’s greatest winners after the movie took home three further awards for “Best Director (Film),” “Best Cinematographer, and Best Actor in a Drama.

She added that Izu Ojukwu’s “Amina” had a great night in May, winning four Oscars for “Best Art Director,” “Best Costume Designer,” “Best Sound Editor,” and “Best Overall Movie.”
