The Super Mario Bros. Movie has had a strong opening, grossing an estimated $26 million on its first day without any Tuesday previews. The film is projected to earn $86.2 million over the three-day weekend and $127.5 million from Wednesday to Sunday. These numbers put it in second place for the best five-day opening for an Illumination title, following Despicable Me 2 in 2013, which grossed $143 million.

The film is also poised to break the record for the highest opening weekend for a video game feature adaptation, currently held by Paramount/Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which grossed $72.1 million in its three-day opening weekend, including Thursday previews.

While the film's Rotten Tomatoes score is 54% Rotten among critics, its audience score is an impressive 95%. This is a significant improvement over the 1993 live-action version, which starred Bob Hoskins, Dennis Hopper, and John Leguizamo and received low scores from both critics and audiences
